the lark

the atom its a symbol. you see that and you think atom. it shows electrons moving in eliptical paths around the nucleas and all. and we know thats not how an atoms works or looks even for that matter.

what i mean to say is that the elements of worship, are inadequate very much like the atom depiction, but this is what we have it helps us carry the idea.

the lark ascending was a piece written by Vaughan Williams who died in 1958. The work opens with this calm set of sustained chords. so then the violin enters as the lark. it starts with this series of ascending and repeated intervals. and elongated arpeggios. and he actually found inspiration in the work, by the english poet Merideth,  who died in 1909. and the composer he includeded portions of Merideths published work. it went like this.

“he rises and begins to round,

he drops the silver chain of sound,

of many links without a break,

in chirrup, whistle, slur and shake.

for singing till his heaven fills,

‘tis love of earth that he instils,

and ever winging up and up,

our valley is his golden cup,

and he the wine which overflows,

to lift us with him as he goes.

till lost on his aerial rings,

in light, and then the fancy sings.”

but we dont feel like the lark much of the time do we?

cause there are other larks for me.

i mean we like to think that it rises on wing from earth to fill the heaven pulling and rest of us with it. that as the lark rises so do we.

but i’m unsure though. cause the ground pulls at my feet.

have you ever noticed that the sky goes all the way to the ground? we’re walking around and we’re in the sky. but theres sky and then theres ground and theres somewhere in between and thats where we live. and sometimes in moments of corprate worship our feet are lifted off the ground for a moment. that can feel like the lark much of the time for me. but you know then monday comes. our feet are back on the ground. and we’re stuck on earth trying to figure out what all this means, and what it means to be alive.

and im trying to make you sing

from inside where you believe

like its something that you need

like it means everything

and im trying to make you feel

that this is for real

that life is happening

and it means everything

im just trying to make you sing.
